It seems that eterm itself has some bizzar problems with handling SIGPIPE,
this has been reported many times over. eterm should set SIGPIPE (and many
other signals) to SIG_DFL before invoking it's sub process.
For a quick fix you might want to try APT, it sets SIGPIPE before invoking
dpkg so this problem should be masked.
