Bug#24950: dselect does not check for disk full
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.4.0.23.2
Severity: wishlist
Here are a few pleases to insert in the following text as needed:
Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please,
Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please, Please.
dselect displays no count of the required disk space for the users
choices and makes no attempt to prevent a disk full scenario.
This is bad because dselect is usually run by root, without any
protection against creating a true disk-full situation in which
nothing functions properly.
Also dpkg-mountable and probably most of the other access methods
will continue for some time after the disk full occurs, further
adding to the necessary cleanup.
As a bare minimum, either the menu or the select display should
list the net total size selected.
The correct formula is
1. Sum of Installed-Size of all selected packages.
2. Minus sum of currently installed sizes of those of the
selected packages already installed (in same or different
version).
3. Removed packages should *not* be subtracted because Remove
comes after Install.
4. Replaced packages should be included because they are removed
during Install.
I am now using Debian 2.0 kernel 2.0.33 (compiled by me) libc-2.0.7.
