Suggestion for dpkg

Hi,

I'd like to suggest a little improvement for dpkg:

Sometimes there is the need to compile programs instead of using
pre-compiled packages for several reasons, e.g. special configurations
or use of a different software versions.

This leads into dependency problems if other packages depend on this
software, because the locally compiled software conflicts with the
package, but without the packages dependencies remain unresolved.

At the moment there is no good way to circumvent these dependency
problems. Neither the --ignore-depends argument, nor the equivs
package are clean ways to solve the problem.

So perhaps dpkg could read a list of package names and versions from
an /etc file and just assume that these packages exist even if they
are not installed.

regards
Hadmut
