With the gadget I have at the moment, .epub isn't good for a document
that one has to frequently page forward and backward in. The calibre
epub viewer is better for this, but I have to run it on a computer, and
there html would be about as good.

There's a specific set of xml/xhtml tags that is allowed in epub.
You'll have to restrict yourself to those. But there's an online epub
validator somewhere that you can use to check your epub files.

What I use to generate .epub files is calibre. There's even a Debian
package for calibre.
