That explains a whole lot. aptitude unhold has never worked for me in Etch (out of a guestimated 10 situations in which it would have been useful). I recommend the work-around, although it has the unfortunate side-effect of losing the "Automatically installed" status of the package. Such is life. Thanks, Sheldon.
