Tried to follow the hints on your page to upgrade from sarge to etch.

After adding the sources I tried to update aptitude but it wouldn't:

Policy says:

aptitude:
  Installed: 0.2.15.9-2
  Candidate: 0.4.4-1
  Version Table:
     0.4.4-1 0
        500 http://ftp.egr.msu.edu etch/main Packages
 *** 0.2.15.9-2 0
        990 http://http.us.debian.org sarge/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I made sure there was not preference file - but I did find a file /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/1000

That had APT::Default-Release "sarge"; - I changed that to
APT::Default-Release "etch";

This should probably be on your upgrade page - actually it should probably be art of an upgrade script that does this and made many of the checks you mentioned.
