I've applied most of your patch, some things slightly differently from 
your suggestions.

Hmm. Don't think so. It's "the same as", but "similar to".

I was not sure about that myself. "The blind" seems to be an acceptable 
term [1] ("the blind man" is worse IMHO).
Alternatives would be "visually impaired" or "visually handicapped".

(The changes have not yet been committed; I want to finish something else 
before I do that.)
