:) Yes you are right.  This could have been a good answer for PAM.

But my initial question was more premitive.  I was wondering how Debian
uses /etc/group entry accessed by pam_unix.so.

root:????:0
...
msql:x:36:
operator:x:37:
list:x:38:
...

What are the assigend meaning of "operator" for example?

I found that Javier got it from Joey Hess's mailing list thread.  So I
guess there were no written rules before for this.
