The linux howto's are good starters, you could read the
Networking-Overview-HOWTO for a start. The linux documentation project
could be interesting ( http://www.linuxdoc.org/ ).

You can search the debian packages on http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
A query like
http://cgi.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=xml&searchon=all&version=stable&release=all
tells you there are at least 20 xml related debian packages.
