linux information

Dear Ma'am/Sir:

Our group at Loyola University Chicago is researching
the topic of "How projects within the Linux community
work".
It seems to us that every project is done by
volunteers throughout the world.
However, there are many questions that remain.

1. who initiates it, and how is it initiated?
   a. who organizes?
   b. how are projects distributed such that it is
possible for each volunteer to work individually?
      i. without extensive background information
      ii. without physical presence

2. resources
   a. finance
      i. donations
      ii. government funding
      iii. how are funds allocated

   b. location
   c. monitoring/maintenance
      i. who is responsible for keeping track of the
phases of the project?
ii. how do you motivate volunteers?(rewards,
recognition)
   d. human resources
      i. how do you recruit or advertise?

3. structure of the organization
   a. how are organizational positions selected?

4. communication issues
   a. frequency and amount of correspondence during a
project
   b. periodic conventions or meetings of members

5. the efficiency and quality of the volunteers
   a. relative length and quality of project compared
to profit driven organizations
   b. verification of ability and qualifications of
potential volunteers
   c. training of volunteers

Could you please give us some information on these
topics or any others you may find important to the
understanding of the orgainization? We would
appreciate any feedback whether it is direct answers
or possible locations where this information can be
found.

Thank you for your time,
