I'm completely aware of that, but if the resulting JPEGs are large,
manuals with a large amount of figures would require a lot of disk
space.  This might not be acceptable for some. 

For now I then propose to use jpeg unless the size gets too big. 
But let's first create some figures (and manuals :-) to see how 
things get.
