Ignoramus' Guide to Deb-Make

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I've begun, in the past few days, an effort to consolidate the several
new-maintainer's "how to use deb-make" guides into a comprehensive,
simple, example-laden document called (after a small debate) "The
Ignoramus' Guide to Making a Debian Package".

The idea is that
a) anybody who can use a text editor and understand a simple makefile
should be able to make a decent debian package
b) there are several guides around for this, none of which is complete or
has lots of examples.

Those who've already responded to me positively have been bcc'd a copy of
this message, in case you don't subscribe to debian-doc. I have a
working copy at http://rivendell.rdny.udel.edu/~harpo/deb-make/ and a list
of the other efforts I'm aware of is at
http://rivendell.rdny.udel.edu/~harpo/deb-make/other_efforts.html.

At this point I'm looking for people who can contribute any of the
following:

1)	sgml-ized debian/* files like the ones found at my url -- I'd like
to get 6 or 7 complete sets from different people and different packages,
hopefully covering just about any situation a new developer with an
easy-to-medium package is likely to run into.
2) other useful tidbits -- things like "most people do XXX wrong the
first time; here's how to save yourself that trouble" .. take a look at
ch1.html #3 for a hint.
3)	policy reviews. I'm doing this with my knowledge of debian
policies, which is ok, but of course the more reviewers we have the less
likely I am to make some terrible mistake. Several people have already
made small change suggestions; thank you.

I'd like to stick to something like the form I've got going on the site,
but if those interested in helping can come to another consensus, I'm
certainly willing to change. I just think a lot of new developers (myself
included) get mired down in trying to get it right, and I'm trying to
help.
