Size of base system

Hi,

I just rebuilt my ppc64el pbuilder chroots:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  562268160 Sep 13 13:08 bookworm.tar
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1309091840 Sep 13 13:09 forky.tar
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1314539520 Sep 13 13:09 sid.tar
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root  552468480 Sep 13 13:08 trixie.tar

Is this known and intended, or should I go down into a rabbit hole to 
find out why the base installation more than doubled in size (TBQH, even 
500 MB sounds ludicrous to me)?
