Re: Interesting learnings about Guix contributor dynamics that apply to Debian?
Hi,
Hi!
I came across this post https://issues.guix.gnu.org/76503 in Guix
where they discuss how to improve the contributor experience, and in
particular what technical changes they are doing.
Guix is interesting as they use a clone of Debbugs as their bug
tracker at https://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=guix.
Apparently they too noticed that the UI is lacking to say the least,
and they created MUMI to use as an additional view into Debbugs. This
can be seen in action in https://issues.guix.gnu.org/ with docs at
https://guix.gnu.org/manual/en/html_node/Debbugs-User-Interfaces.html
personally, I think have a UI for debbugs would certainly help to
attract contributions. While I learned how to use the BTS and manipulate
bugs IMVHO it's not exactly newcomerfriendly, especially the BTS control
commands.
Even if we have the UI just for the sake of users browsing bugs this
will certainly improve things (IMO). Anyone else can still use whatever
they prefer (bts(1), mail, reportbug, etc.) to interact with the BTS.
I looked into how much effort packaging mumi would be, and it's only six
missing scheme modules to do so. I filed RFPs for all [0].
I don't plan on packaging this, but this is something that IMO would
improve things. Personally, I prefer the command line, but we have to be
realistic and acknowledge that the majority of users prefers GUIs these days.

werdahias
