ftp is unmaintained/non-existing upstream and the package seems to be unmaintained as well (see related #986997). It should be removed in favour of tnftp (fully command-line compatible) and tnftp should provide a package transition. Whoever wants to use the netkit source can still install ftp-ssl.

If no one wants to adopt the package, I am going to file a RM bug in a month to enable implementing that transition.

Hi,

As many of you may have noticed, Debian's default ftp client (netkit-ftp) is dead upstream and
unmaintained in Debian for quite some time. I think that such a key package deserves more
attention. There is a fully command-line compatible alternative package available: tnftp.
This is battle tested by most (all?) BSD systems as their default ftp client.

I propose removing netkit-ftp and transitioning to tnftp as the new default ftp.
Please comment here if you want to suggest other alternatives or oppose this change.
Please comment on #1000825 if you have comments on the transition implementation.
There are already some open questions on that bug.

Thanks for your consideration,
Bastian
