The repositories on Alioth weren't lost and can still be found archived
on https://alioth-archive.debian.org/

Arguably in Git everything but the maintainer's local repository might
be a mirror.  This was even called a security feature as hash collisions
might need to be sneaked in there to get included in release tarballs[1].
