I am using xfce4-terminal with the "Black on White" preset. I just noticed that the xfce4-terminal Preferences / Colours / "Show bold text in bright colors" is automatically checked when selecting the preset. Unchecking this box gives me dark colours, making yellow the brown described by you and Stuart, and the white used in mega-tools becomes a usable grey. I think this fixes my terminal colour problems.

Thanks also for the fascinating detail on ANSI escape sequences. Hopefully one unchecked preference renders these unnecessary. :-)
