Bug#902288: general: GNOME/nautilus thumbnail helper script from /usr/share/thumbnailers fails with ENOENT due to bwrap
I have a GNOME/nautilus thumbnail helper shell script written in Bash under
/usr/bin/calibre-thumbnailer, with executable permissions and an appropriate
shebang, which delegates extraction of e-book thumbnails to Calibre and used to
work until recently, when I upgraded to Testing (buster) and started using a
couple of packages from Unstable (sid).
Upon noticing failed thumbnailing attempts under
~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory I straced the process
following forked children and noticed the bwrap container within which
thumbnail helpers are launched, e.g.:

Given the complex interaction between the helper metadata file registered under
/usr/share/thumbnailers, which could mention a full path or not, calling execve
for each $PATH entry otherwise:
Exec=(...)calibre-thumbnailer %i %o %s
and the shell script shebang formulation, which could be many things including:
#! bash, #! /bin/bash, #! /usr/bin/env bash, etc.
and the other required paths needing to be resolved inside the container's
filesystem namespace for everything to work (e.g. /sbin/ldconfig, ...), it
seems like the read-only bind mounts set up for the container after starting
from a clean slate sandbox (--unshare-all) are too restrictive and will more
often than not result in ENOENT errors.
I tried a bit of "manual patching", such as copying the bash executable to
/usr/bin, which we see above is mounted by bwrap inside the container from
/usr, with a symlink to /bin, and pointing the shebang to that, but realised
there would be too much manual work to do to make this script run:

I like very much sandboxing of thumbnail extraction, as media vulnerabilities
are common and just browsing a directory in the Nautilus GUI shouldn't be an
opportunity for an exploit to run and compromise the system, but the list of
mounts needs to be tweaked to allow shell scripts to run, I think. If you
tested with the actual script above, that would be great.
