 The mode provides syntax highlighted, and keyboard shortcuts for
 editing, compiling and previewing markdown.

This package will be maintained by the nascent Emacs Addons packaging
team.

There is currently an old version of this package in emacs-goodies-el,
but I think it's substantial enough to stand on it's own as a package.
If/when this package is uploaded, I'll file a bug suggesting it be
removed from the bundle.  There are also substantial maintainer and
user advantages to having a standalone package.  Because of the way
this is packaged (using dh-elpa), there will not be file conflicts
with the bundled version.
