Re: init multiple instances of a daemon

Hi,

thanks for bringing this up. I was always very happy when a package
provides good integrated handling of multiple instances, and for many
years (silently) have the opinion that this should be provided by many
more packages in Debian.

My preferred solution is the one done by the OpenVPN package and a few
others (xen?): New instances are created by a new configuration
file /etc/openvpn/foo.conf (or directory; I have switched to tinc since
a while, so I don’t recall precisely).
$ /etc/init.d/openvpn start/stop/restart
affects all instances, while
$ /etc/init.d/openvpn start/stop/restart foo
only affects foo.

I find that much more elegant than copying init scripts, and would
expect a similar interface from modern init systems (but maybe I’m
overly optimistic here).

Greetings,
Joachim
