One interesting thing with Debian is that DDs can't go into another maintainer's package and change something (such as a new feature or upstream release) without the maintainer's consent. If you're able to get the maintainer of this package to sign off on the patch, and ack a NMU against it, I'm sure any number of us would be more than happy to sponsor the upload.
