Thorsten, you should have kept your custom debian/rules. If it prevented incompetent developers from NMUing the package, then all good for you and for Debian.Was there perhaps some emoticon missing?

Uncommon debian/rules setups might be required in some cases but surely they should not be used to intentionally make it harder for other developers to understand?
Of course, scaring certain developers away should never be a goal. It can be a nice side-effect, though.
