By the same view, totem improves GNOME, but it is not needed at all.
Gcalctool improves GNOME, but it is not needed at all.
Here’s the point: those packages are *part* of GNOME. And that includes
nm-gnome, too.
If you want only the required components, install gnome-session.
Everything else is “improvement”.
