FreeNX upstream tried to rebase them to X.org long time ago and claimed
that it would basically work, however that was (to the best of my 
knowledge) never published.

Not possible for license reasons, NoMachine relicenses the distribution
under the GPL2, which - even though it's license compliant - makes it
(intentionally) inacceptable for upstream X.org; their business model
depends on that.

No, it's a very intentional decision to make them the sole contact
for commercial uses.
