This sounds like a bad name, since there used to be a regex module in the standard distribution a few years back and there's therefore a fair amount of documentation warning against using it.

that's the upstream name, and infact I've renamed the also source to python-regex (instead of keeping 'regex' as upsteram chose); also, it's well known in the python community what regex module is. To make it more clear, packages will be python{,3}-regex{,-dbg} but what you'll import is regex, as per Python Policy.

Could you point to some references about why it's a bad name?

The module was removed in Python 2.5.
