Since the advent of logical volume management I personally find this
the easiest solution and use it whenever possible, but LVM and
filesystem resizing tools aren't generally geared toward new users
(EVMS wasn't too bad in this regard but seems to have lost a lot of
market share in the community in more recent years). I'm not
entirely thrilled that D-I pushes users to allocate all their local
disk during installation rather than leaving room to grow in the
volume group, but some combination of education and user-friendly
disk management tools would be needed to shift this paradigm.
