I've not noticed any lack of functionality. There again, I regard less notifications as an improvement in functionality. I probably don't have the "other components of GNOME" installed. (In case it matters, I tried the new gnome-session and didn't like the whole lack-of-menu/fading-with-icons thing, so I'm using gnome-session-fallback.
