Some systems have quite a small /boot partition, I've had some problems with a server with this situation that resulted in being unable to perform a normal upgrade of the kernel using apt-get, because nowdays kernels are larger than the ones when the partition table was created. I could upgrade the kernels anyway manually with some procedure, but no magic can make a large kernel fit on a not large enough partition.
