Sorry. I got following when I manually did "dpkg-source -x"
for a package built with pbuilder.
$ dpkg-source -x texworks_0.5~svn843-1.dsc
dpkg-source: warning: extracting unsigned source package (texworks_0.5~svn843-1.dsc)
dpkg-source: info: extracting texworks in texworks-0.5~svn843
dpkg-source: info: unpacking texworks_0.5~svn843.orig.tar.gz
dpkg-source: info: applying texworks_0.5~svn843-1.diff.gz

Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?
The text leading up to this was:

|+++ texworks-0.5~svn843/debian/README.Debian

No file to patch. Skipping patch.

and texworks_0.5~svn843-1.diff.gz looked as follows.

Aparently it was corrupted. I don't modified /etc/pbuilderrc,
don't have ~/.pbuilderrc. And pbuilder used to work fine with
me until recently.
There is no problem if I built a package outside pbuilder.
