I'd guess that it might be related to that, maybe vmware doesnt cope well with 8 cores, or with 8 cores and the outdated 2.6.30 kernel, I dunno. But I do know that usually those tools you mentioned dont segfault and if they do, that usually indicates a hardware problem.
