I'd say you should try to get upstream (or yourself) to patch the reader application to fetch the data from the internet.

But it's not up to me to decide. This should be discussed with the other Debian developers instead, which is the exact reason why I sent my initial e-mail to the debian-devel list. Adding it back to CC.
