I share the view that the most appropriate way to give credit would be
to preserve the debian/changelog. Also, as long as the technical choice
made in Ubuntu are also fine with Debian, I see as pointless the
proposal of redoing the packaging (if it is good).
Last but not least, once upon a time there used to be an Utnubu project
in Debian [1], if you settle with some reasonable guidelines, you might
want to write them somewhere there (and advertise them a bit).
