The problem isn't as much a *hard* dependency as much as it is a huge
amount of noise in the logs, which gets massively annoying.

And I'm didn't necessarily say that we should go with 2.6.18, as much
as it would be a good idea to patch out and spupress the deprecation
warnings in 2.6.18, given that it will be undeprecated in 2.6.19.
