/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lraw1394

A number of packages (at least three, but possibly more) fail to build
with the error:
    /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lraw1394
Can someone investigate why this is the case.  I've put built logs
(mbox file) at http://people.debian.org/~tbm/logs/1394.bz2
