Probably because they were busy at conferences, or managing the sarge
release.

Yes, as Adam has repeatedly stated, he will work on php5 post-sarge.
Considering the constant headaches that php4 provides, I can't blame him.

Yes. Hell, I consider php4 too buggy for Debian. php5 is even worse.
Have you seen the changelog[0]? These are not minor little bugs that are
being fixed...

I seriously doubt it, but why expend the extra effort when a) it's not
going to make it into sarge, b) the version of php that *will* be in sarge
could still use more attention, and c) early versions of php5 are expected
to be unstable.

The proper place for php5 right now (imo) is in experimental. I don't
speak for any of the other php maintainers, of course; but personally if
feel it's a waste of time to deal w/ it right now, time that could be
better spent fixing other bugs in Debian.
