The message by Thomas in question was quite clearly quoting Donald Rumsfeld.

The total mess in Iraq is surely quite terrifying for everyone there (both 
Americans and Iraqis).

Threads don't end when someone says "I say Hitler now shut up".  Threads end 
when someone makes ad-hominem attacks with unjust comparisons to evil people.  
A mailing list devoted to discussing history could have long threads 
discussing Hitler without invoking Godwin's law.
