Of course: Debian must be optimized for your case, and your case only.

In my experience, and with the latest trends taken by linux kernel
developers, the latest linux version IS a toy unreleased OS.

So.  Would it be possible to install a 'generic' ping by default, then
to provide 'optimized' pings for whatever kernels, and have the kernel
image packages suggest the optimized versions?
