The gnome-1 libraries are in use by other Debian packages.

Anyone who does not want to maintain a package should orphan the damn
thing. It seems that it is only the gnome maintainers who do not
understand this simple principle. Do not declare what other people
can or should maintain, simply orphan it. There is no shame in doing
so. We know how to deal with orphaned packages. Do not declare that
nobody could or should maintain it. If you don't want to, then
don't. Orphan the damn thing if you don't want to maintain it.
