Yes, at least if you substitute "Postscript Type1 fonts" for "TeX
fonts".  The lmodern-x11 package is an example how to do it.  There's
even a patch around to make a tetex-xfonts package (#138394), but we
postponed this until after sarge (autumn 2004, you know?).  I cannot
judge whether the TTF fonts are better suited for screen representation
than Type1.

Ah, well.  But that's also an improvement.  It might be, however, that
the existing hinting worked fine in the Type1 fonts, and just wasn't
converted to TTF properly?
