problems with debian & non-us mirrors?

PLEASE CC ANY REPLIES TO ME AS I AM NO LONGER SUBSCRIBED TO DEBIAN-DEVEL.

is there any known problem with mirroring debian at the moment?

for the last week or so, my debmirror process has failed to mirror
either the main debian archive or the debian-non-US archive.

debmirror is version 20040118
perl is 5.8.3-1

i've tried several different source sites, with the results being identical in
each case. i.e. this is NOT specific to mirror.aarnet.edu.au - i only tried
that site AFTER mirroring from ftp.debian.org and non-us.debian.org failed.

for debian, it says:

Mirroring to /home/ftp/debian from ftp://anonymous:mirror.aarnet.edu.au//debian/
Arches: i386
Dists: unstable,stable
Sections: main,contrib,non-free
Passive mode on.
Attempting to get lock, this might take 2 minutes before it fails.

the problem here seems to be that the dists/unstable/Contents-i386.gz file is missing.

i'm running this mirror job without "--get-contents" - it seems to help, it has
not reported an error about missing Contents-i386 file and is now building
lists of packages to delete and to download. in fact, it has deleted a whole
bunch of old packages and is now downloading new ones.

that's a lot better than nothing, but i want the Contents-i386 file - i find it
very useful.

for non-US, it says:

looks like there's no Release file for stable or unstable here. not good.
