Go ahead. But be advised that ifupdown's maintainer will definetely
not like it. He has supported the NMUs in the past, but he has - at
least to my knowledge - never commented on the numerous offers to take
(co-)maintainership of the package.
There are at least two rewrite projects on the way, so these eforts
need to be coordinated.
May I suggest creating a project on alioth and a ifupdown-devel
mailing list that might serve as a coordination place for the ifupdown
efforts?
