Of course, it is verboten to directly mess with the /etc/rcX.d
symlinks, as this is to be taken as a black box that can be replaced.
For example, by file.rc which has a much more intuitive interface.
The maintainer and init script interface to the run levels is
update-rc.d and invoke-rc.d.
