Well, the plan is to make the dpkg-deb interface more formalized.  What I
mean, is being able to use it in a filter, with plugging input and output.

Ie, multiple input methods: .deb, .rpm, filesystem

filter mode: standard tar output

output mode: filesystem, .deb, .rpm

Repacking and editting then become easy to do.
