See my other reply regarding that but I wanted to interject that I don't agree about .a files being useless without the other libraries that they depend upon. That's only the case if your goal is to get a fully statically compiled binary. It's certainly possible there are situations where you'd want to statically link some thing (zlib) and not others (glibc). Stephen
