In my understanding, the shared interface of all[1] editors is that they
allow interactive modification of a file when called with that file as
an argument. An Wouter pointed out, I believe that the use of
/usr/bin/editor and sensible-editor is already based on that assumption.


[1] Or let's say what we define as an editor.
