To throw fuel on the fire, consider ncftp:
--8<---------:- snip -:---------8<---------:- snip -:---------8<--
<dmg@jolt[~]> ncftp
NcFTP 3.1.5 (Oct 13, 2002) by Mike Gleason (ncftp@ncftp.com).
ncftp> quit
Thank you for using NcFTP Client.
Ask your system administrator to try NcFTPd Server!
http://www.ncftpd.com
<dmg@jolt[~]>
--8<---------:- snip -:---------8<---------:- snip -:---------8<--
NcFTPd is non-free. The message shows up every 7 runs, or never if
'yes-i-know-about-NcFTPd=yes' in your ~/.ncftp/prefs_v3 file.
(main.c:355).
Maybe adding a similar option to cdrecord might be a nicer
compromise?
