Actually, I have built X before, but not recently - that was back when I
was waiting for Debian to include XFree 4.1 or 4.2, so that my video card
would be supported...

I guess that might not have gotten cleaned out before I re-installed
debian's XFree 4.2.

I'll try removing that, and see what happens.  Thanks for the help!
