I don't want to blame you package but there is a lot of bad thing in it. First of all lets see you control file. The standard-version is 3.2.1 it is a bit old. The second problem is with rules. You use MPlayer's autodetection while configuring codecs. Thats bad for it because it will be fully optimized for you box. Second thing. There is a little bug in MPlayer's Makefile. I told the upstream to fix he did it in the CVS so it will be fixed in the next release. The bug is the following. While running distclean there is a binary called codec-cfg. distclean doesnt remove this file. So i patched my source package. I think the best way is to decide which package is better to be in debian is to check them by some DDs.
