I like this idea a lot, and have myself suggested it in the past.  It
will not get done, though, because every time anybody has suggested a
change to the versioning scheme, the release manager has vetoed it,
regardless of any arguments made.

IIRC, the arguments in the past against this have basically been that
versions are completely arbitrary, and we shouldn't worry about making
them otherwise.  Of course, that ignores the fact that this proposal
would make them something *other* than completely arbitrary...
