When I was packaging FreeBSD's libc, I named it freebsd-libc4. Seemed reasonable to me.
Besides imagine if FreeBSD's libc or other BSD libc is ITP-ed. Distinguishing their name apparently is a good idea, for example "diet-libc".
Actually there is an open ITP for FreeBSD sources. It needs amendment now, though.
The freebsd-i386 port is now based on glibc 2.3, and the binary package is named libc1. (glibc upstream decided the soname should be 1.)
BTW, what does "12" of libc12 mean?
I believe it's from the soname of NetBSD's libc. The BSD's tend to use major numbers, and not bother with minor ones.
